The Right Fix Depends on Where the Water Actually Stops

Two properties can show the same puddle for entirely different reasons. One has a downspout line packed with silt; the next has a sound line discharging to a spot that no longer drains. Guessing costs money and often moves the problem rather than solving it, so we work the system in order.

  • Identify the water source — roof runoff, surface runoff, a sump discharge, or ground water moving beneath the surface
  • Inspect and test the existing path with water wherever it is accessible
  • Determine the likely restriction, failure, or simply an outlet that cannot keep up
  • Evaluate the grade and identify realistic discharge locations for the property
  • Recommend the least invasive practical solution that addresses the cause
  • Explain plainly when a repair is enough, when replacement makes more sense, and when a different method belongs in the plan

The correct solution depends on the source of the water, the existing grade, the condition of the current system, and the safest approved discharge point. That is a property-by-property answer, not a package.

Existing Line Testing & Unclogging

We run water into the existing buried line and watch what it does. Where a line is accessible and sound enough to work with, jetting can clear silt, sediment, and root intrusion. Not every buried line can be cleared this way, and we will tell you when we hit that limit rather than keep charging at it.

Underground Downspout Repair & Replacement

Crushed sections, separated joints, collapsed corrugated pipe, and lines that have filled in past recovery. Sometimes a short section is the whole problem; sometimes the run has reached the end of its service life and replacing it costs less than chasing it.

New Solid PVC Downspout Drainage

New underground downspout conveyance built with solid PVC, gradual fittings, and cleanout access, carrying roof water away from the foundation to a discharge point the property can actually support.

Catch Basins & Surface Drains

Where surface water collects in a defined low area, a catch basin gives it a place to enter the system and a sediment sump that can be cleaned out later instead of silting the whole run.

Channel Drains

Suited to hard surfaces — a driveway apron, garage entry, patio edge, or walkway — where water runs as a sheet across pavement and needs intercepting along a line rather than at a single point.

French Drains, Where They Fit

A French drain collects water moving through the soil. That makes it the right answer for subsurface and ground water problems and the wrong answer for a clogged downspout line. We use them where the water is actually in the ground, not as a default.

Grading & Water Channeling

Sometimes the most durable fix is shaping the ground so water leaves on its own. Practical regrading and channeling can reduce how much has to be piped in the first place.

Dedicated Sump Discharge

A sump pump needs its own route to its own outlet, sized and placed so the water it removes does not simply return. This is always planned as a separate line.

Pop-Up Emitters & Dry Wells

A pop-up emitter releases water at a chosen point away from the home and closes back down between rains. A dry well holds volume and lets it soak away — useful where soil and site conditions allow it, and unsuitable where they do not.

Sidewalk Boring & Concrete Access

Where a line has to cross a sidewalk or slab, boring underneath usually avoids cutting it. When concrete access genuinely cannot be avoided, we say so before the work starts and handle the excavation and restoration.

Approved Discharge Connections

Some properties have a roadside ditch, curb, catch basin, or municipal outlet available. Those connections are possible where an approved outlet exists and when permitted — which is a question we settle before promising a route, not after.

Backfill & Landscape Restoration

Turf and plantings are protected where practical, trenches are backfilled and compacted, and the work area is restored to a reasonable condition rather than left as a scar across the yard.

Sump Discharge Is Always Its Own Route

A sump pump can move a large volume of water in a short burst, and it runs on its own schedule rather than the weather's. Tying that discharge into an existing underground downspout line means the two compete for the same pipe at the worst possible moment — and a restriction anywhere in that shared run sends water back toward the house.

CleanFlow evaluates sump discharge as a separate, dedicated route with its own outlet. We do not recommend connecting a sump-pump discharge into an existing underground downspout line.
How we build it

Built for Flow and Future Access

Most of the failed underground downspout lines we dig up were not badly damaged. They were built in a way that made them impossible to maintain and easy to block. Where site conditions and project scope allow, this is how CleanFlow builds instead.

  • ASTM 2729 solid PVC for underground downspout conveyance — smooth wall, so silt and debris keep moving instead of settling into ridges
  • No corrugated pipe on new solid downspout-conveyance runs. Corrugation traps sediment, crushes under load, and is the most common thing we replace
  • Gradual 45-degree fittings underground rather than sharp 90-degree turns, so debris has a path through the bend instead of a wall to pack against
  • Wye cleanouts with removable plugs at downspout transitions, so the line can be opened and cleared later without excavation
  • Roughly 1 to 2 percent slope where site conditions permit — enough fall to keep solids moving with the water
  • Accessible maintenance points placed where they can practically be reached, not buried and forgotten
  • A discharge point chosen for the property and an approved outlet, rather than the nearest convenient spot
  • Landscape protection, proper backfill, and reasonable restoration as part of the job rather than an afterthought
  • Follow-up consideration for normal soil settling where that is included in the project scope

Depth, slope, and outlet are decided by the property. Utility locations, existing structures, frost considerations, tree roots, and where the water can legally and practically go all shape the final design, so we do not publish a single number and apply it everywhere.

Drainage projects vary widely in scope, so the timeline does too. The sequence does not.

3. Clear Written Estimate

Scope, materials, and price in writing before anything is dug. Where approvals, permits, or utility locating apply, that is identified up front.

4. Installation or Repair

The work itself, built to the standards above, with landscaping protected where practical and the site kept as contained as the job allows.

5. Flow Verification

Water goes through the finished system while we watch it. A drainage line is not finished because it is buried; it is finished because it moves water.

6. Cleanup & Documentation

Backfill, restoration, and photos of what was found and what was built — including where the cleanouts are, so the next person is not guessing.

Drainage Questions We Get Asked

Straight answers about buried downspout lines, method selection, and what happens to your yard.

Usually one of four things. The line has filled with silt, roof grit, and shingle granules that washed down over the years. Roots have found a joint and grown into it. A section has crushed, separated, or collapsed — common with older corrugated pipe. Or the pipe is sound but the outlet is buried, blocked, or was never adequate for the volume the roof delivers. Testing with water tells us which one it is, and the answer changes the fix completely.

It depends on what the line is made of, what condition it is in, and whether we can reach it. Accessible lines that are structurally sound can often be jetted clear of silt and roots. Lines that are crushed, separated, collapsed, or so far gone that clearing them would not last are better replaced. We do not claim every buried line can be cleared — some cannot, and jetting a failed line is money spent twice. You will get an honest read on which situation you are in before any work is agreed.

No. A French drain is built to collect water moving through the soil, which makes it a strong solution for subsurface and ground water and a poor one for a blocked downspout line. Installing a French drain when the real problem is a clogged buried pipe adds cost without addressing the cause. It is one method among several — alongside solid PVC conveyance, catch basins, channel drains, grading, pop-up emitters, and dry wells — and it earns its place only when the water is genuinely in the ground.

That is decided by the property, not by preference. Options can include a lower point on the lot, a pop-up emitter, a dry well where soil and site conditions allow, or a connection to a roadside ditch, curb, catch basin, or public drainage outlet where an approved outlet is available and when permitted. Some of those require property-specific approval, utility locating, right-of-way permission, municipal approval, or a permit or bond. CleanFlow does not have automatic permission to connect to a road, curb, catch basin, storm sewer, or municipal system, so the available outlet is something we establish during the assessment — subject to property conditions and local requirements.

Turf and plantings are protected where practical, and we plan the route to work around what matters to you when the site allows it. Trenches are backfilled and compacted, and the work area is restored to a reasonable condition. Some settling over the following months is normal as backfilled soil consolidates, and where it is part of the project scope we account for follow-up on that. Where a sidewalk or slab is in the way, boring underneath usually avoids cutting it; if concrete access genuinely cannot be avoided, you will hear that before the work starts, not after.
